One is deer. Wild pig is another like Tot says. They like sugar cane and nuts also. Lots of other things too, but someone else can answer for some of their favorites.

Yes, Apples are what they like. I have come upon their cache of apples stored in a cool dark hallow deep in the mountain. Stored between two big boulders and a flat stone on top. I happen to smell it when pass it and knew that there are no apple tree that high up in mountain and zero in on it by smell and peer into it and saw the cache. I left it at that they need that cache more than I.

A "cache" is a storage of something, in this case, stored apples. "Save for another day".

Is this the report that Dmitri told about in his book The Russian Snowman? If so maybe I can have Tom scan the pages and load them here on the forum for all to read. I remember the Almast being in the apple orchard and their capturing it but it escaped over night from the building they were trying to keep it in. I think they placed it in the trunk compartment of their car to transport it to the building.

found their storage areas full of nuts, apples, corn that they took from our corn fields, and mushrooms. They placed one supply of food in a hollowed out tree trunk at the roots and covered it with earth. Another they had in the middle of a hollowed out part of a tree. Also they had in a small cave they made from larger rocks. At the old Farm there was a area we called the old spring and there are two rock boulders there that are close to one anther with another bolder at the back that encloses this on three sides. they brought in a flat large slate rock and placed it on top of this formation and then placed a bunch of smaller rocks at the opened end to close it up and had a several bushels of corn, plums and wine sap apples stored in there during three different winters. I think they stopped using it and removed the top slate rock because I decided that last year they stored their food I was going to get some of that corn for my horse to eat and they did not like my doing that.

I have heard that the Forest Friends don't like citrus fruits such as grapefruit or oranges. Can anyone confirm this? I can see why they would not like grapefruit, but they are missing out if they don't like oranges. %(

I know that they don't like or accept grapefruit here or in a few other states we have researched in. However we did eventually get Fox and his family members to eat oranges. We had to slice them in quarters and eat one where they could see our doing so before they tried them. Then they would eat them sometimes. I just don't think they like the taste or something to much. However you may not believe this but they will gobble lemons up like they are going out of style. Lemons are down right sour and they like them. Talk about going from one extreme to another, they like anything sweet the sweeter the better, then they like lemons and not so rip persimmons. Have any of you tried to eat an unripened persimmon? They will turn your mouth literally wrong side out.
Yours,
Jan
